Color Grading

Qualifiers and Power Windows

Isolate specific colors or regions for targeted grading in Tooscut.

Target corrections to specific colors (qualifiers) or frame regions (power windows).

Qualifier

Select pixels by hue, saturation, and luminance. Only selected pixels are affected by downstream nodes.

HSL range controls

ParameterDescription
Hue centerTarget hue on the color wheel
Hue widthRange of hues to include
Saturation centerTarget saturation level
Saturation widthRange of saturation to include
Luminance centerTarget brightness level
Luminance widthRange of brightness to include

Each parameter has a softness control that feathers the selection edge.

Invert

Toggle Invert to affect everything except the selected range. Example: select skin tones and invert to desaturate the background while keeping skin natural.

Example: isolating sky

  1. Add a Qualifier node.
  2. Set hue center to blue (~210deg).
  3. Set moderate hue width to capture sky blue range.
  4. Narrow saturation range to exclude desaturated blues (grey buildings).
  5. Add a correction node after the qualifier to deepen the sky.

Power Window

Geometric mask on the frame. Only pixels inside (or outside) the window are affected by subsequent nodes.

Shapes

ShapeDescription
CircleElliptical mask
RectangleRectangular mask
GradientLinear gradient mask
PolygonCustom polygon shape

Controls

ParameterDescription
Center X / YPosition
Scale X / YSize
RotationAngle
SoftnessEdge feathering (inner and outer)
InvertAffect the area outside instead

All parameters support keyframes for tracking moving subjects.

Combining qualifiers and power windows

Stack both on the same clip:

  1. Power Window to isolate a face.
  2. Qualifier within that region to select skin tones only.
  3. Correction node applies only to skin, only within the window.

Color Space Transform

Convert between professional color spaces and gamuts.

Settings

SettingOptions
Input color spacesRGB, Linear, ACEScg, Log C, S-Log2, S-Log3, C-Log3, V-Log, BMD Film, RedLog3G10
Output color spaceSame options as input
Input gamutRec.709, S-Gamut, S-Gamut3, S-Gamut3.Cine, ARRI Wide Gamut, ACEScg AP1, RED Wide Gamut, DCI-P3, Rec.2020, V-Gamut, BMD Wide Gamut
Output gamutSame options as input
Tone mappingNone, Simple

Typical use: convert ARRI Log C / ARRI Wide Gamut to Linear / Rec.709 at the start of the node chain, grade in a known space, then let output tone mapping handle display conversion.
