Qualifiers and Power Windows
Isolate specific colors or regions for targeted grading in Tooscut.
Target corrections to specific colors (qualifiers) or frame regions (power windows).
Qualifier
Select pixels by hue, saturation, and luminance. Only selected pixels are affected by downstream nodes.
HSL range controls
| Parameter | Description |
|---|---|
| Hue center | Target hue on the color wheel |
| Hue width | Range of hues to include |
| Saturation center | Target saturation level |
| Saturation width | Range of saturation to include |
| Luminance center | Target brightness level |
| Luminance width | Range of brightness to include |
Each parameter has a softness control that feathers the selection edge.
Invert
Toggle Invert to affect everything except the selected range. Example: select skin tones and invert to desaturate the background while keeping skin natural.
Example: isolating sky
- Add a Qualifier node.
- Set hue center to blue (~210deg).
- Set moderate hue width to capture sky blue range.
- Narrow saturation range to exclude desaturated blues (grey buildings).
- Add a correction node after the qualifier to deepen the sky.
Power Window
Geometric mask on the frame. Only pixels inside (or outside) the window are affected by subsequent nodes.
Shapes
| Shape | Description |
|---|---|
| Circle | Elliptical mask |
| Rectangle | Rectangular mask |
| Gradient | Linear gradient mask |
| Polygon | Custom polygon shape |
Controls
| Parameter | Description |
|---|---|
| Center X / Y | Position |
| Scale X / Y | Size |
| Rotation | Angle |
| Softness | Edge feathering (inner and outer) |
| Invert | Affect the area outside instead |
All parameters support keyframes for tracking moving subjects.
Combining qualifiers and power windows
Stack both on the same clip:
- Power Window to isolate a face.
- Qualifier within that region to select skin tones only.
- Correction node applies only to skin, only within the window.
Color Space Transform
Convert between professional color spaces and gamuts.
Settings
| Setting | Options |
|---|---|
| Input color space | sRGB, Linear, ACEScg, Log C, S-Log2, S-Log3, C-Log3, V-Log, BMD Film, RedLog3G10 |
| Output color space | Same options as input |
| Input gamut | Rec.709, S-Gamut, S-Gamut3, S-Gamut3.Cine, ARRI Wide Gamut, ACEScg AP1, RED Wide Gamut, DCI-P3, Rec.2020, V-Gamut, BMD Wide Gamut |
| Output gamut | Same options as input |
| Tone mapping | None, Simple |
Typical use: convert ARRI Log C / ARRI Wide Gamut to Linear / Rec.709 at the start of the node chain, grade in a known space, then let output tone mapping handle display conversion.
